Noise for sleeping, focusing and drowning out the office

Twelve sounds you can layer into your own mix — noise colours, weather, water, a campfire. Everything is generated live in your browser, so there are no files to download, nothing repeats on a loop, and it keeps going as long as you like. Set a sleep timer and it fades itself out.

The guide

Which colour of noise do I want?

White noise has equal energy at every frequency, so it sounds bright and hissy — like an untuned radio. It is the best at masking sharp, high sounds: keyboards, voices through a wall, a beeping truck outside.

Pink noise drops 3 dB per octave as it climbs, which is roughly how our ears weight things, so it sounds even and natural — closer to steady rain or a waterfall. Most people find it the easiest to leave on for hours.

Brown noise (Brownian, not "brown") drops 6 dB per octave, so it is all low end — a deep rumble like a distant waterfall or a plane cabin. It is the gentlest on the ears and the best at covering low rumbles: traffic, an upstairs neighbour, a snorer.

Presets worth trying

⚠️
On volume. If you are running this all night, keep it quiet — around the level of a soft shower, and never loud enough that you'd raise your voice over it. For a baby's room, sleep-sound devices should be kept low and well away from the crib; paediatric guidance is to keep them below about 50 dB and across the room, not on the cot rail.

Questions

Does this use any data while it plays?

No. The sound is synthesised by your browser in real time — there are no audio files. Once this page has loaded you can go offline and it will keep playing.

Will it keep playing on my phone with the screen off?

Usually not for long. Mobile browsers suspend audio when you leave the tab or lock the phone. Turn on "Keep the screen on" above and leave this tab in front, or use a laptop or tablet plugged in for overnight use.

Nothing happens when I press play.

Two likely reasons: every slider is still at zero — raise one — or your phone's silent/ringer switch is on, which mutes browser audio on iPhones.

Where are my saved mixes kept?

In this browser only, in local storage. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Clearing your browser data clears them — use "Copy link to this mix" if you want a mix you can keep or send to someone.

Does it loop?

No. The noise is generated continuously and the events — thunder, crackles, chirps, gusts — are scheduled at random, so you will never hear the same few seconds twice.
